Target shopper's kitchen nightmare after $10 item shatters: 'Macca's it is then'

The mum-of-two thought she'd gotten a bargain until disaster struck.

A woman's dinner-making TikTok tutorial took an unexpected turn when her brand new pot from Target disintegrated right before her eyes.

"I was just making a cute dinner tutorial, until it ended very abruptly," NSW mum-of-two Shannen Gunning told her followers.

"I just got this new pot today, it was only $10 from Target," she said as she sautéed her vegetables.

But as she added water and tomatoes to what looked like a bolognese mix, disaster struck - the bottom of the pot seemingly collapsed, sending the entire base, along with her meal, onto the stovetop.

With a look of shock, Gunning turns to her partner off-camera, exclaiming: "The pot cracked... it broke."

Amidst laughter and disbelief, the Sydney woman films the remnants of the pot, which now has a clear crack through the middle.

"Guess we're not having that for dinner then," Gunning said.

"Macca's it is then," was the disheartened caption on Gunning's TikTok video.

Followers were quick to weigh in on the issue, with several immediately blaming user error: "That's a ceramic baking dish," one person pointed out, accompanied by copious laughing emojis.

But the original poster defended herself, saying: "The website says it can transition from stovetop to oven."

Others offered alternate explanations, with one person suggesting: "Was it cold water you put in? If so, the dramatic shift in temperature would have caused it to break."

But is there more to the story? As an Anko product, a brand that has transitioned from Kmart to Target recently, some users pointed out discrepancies in the product descriptions on the two sites.

"On the Kmart website, it was advertised as being able to transition from oven to table top, whereas the Target website says stovetop to oven," one user noted, telling the poster: "that's on them, not on you."

However, Target have since updated the product description, now categorising it as "oven to table cookware" as well as stating the item is "oven, microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe," with no mention of stovetop.

A Target spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle the retailer takes the quality and safety of all their products very seriously.

"Our Anko Round Casserole Dish is oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer safe, and we have updated our online webpage to reflect this," the spokesperson said.

"We encourage any customer who experiences an issue with a product to get in touch with our customer service team to ensure that it can be investigated properly."

The Target team is currently working directly with this customer to resolve the issue.

Nevertheless, the incident left many sympathising with the woman's plight. "That would send me over the edge after a long day and just wanting dinner!" one person commented. Amen to that!

So, while the woman's dinner plans may have gone up in smoke, her TikTok certainly provided entertainment for her audience - and a cautionary tale for anyone looking to buy new cookware!
