Woolworths has been forced to revoke almost 80,000 prizes “mistakenly” awarded to shoppers in New Zealand this week.

An email was sent out to the tens of thousands of customers “telling them they had won a prize in our Big Night In prize draw”, a spokesperson for Woolworths New Zealand confirmed to Yahoo News, however it was only intended for “around 1,000 customers”.

“An incorrect audience selection meant that it was sent to other customers mistakenly,” they explained.

The Big Night In gives shoppers the chance to win 4,000 rewards points, equalling NZ$30 (A$27), by boosting the offer in the Everyday Rewards App and purchasing three participating products. Each week, new winners are selected.

According to Stuff.co.nz, the email sent to customers read, “Nice one! You've won 4000 Everyday Rewards points from our Big Night In prize draw. Your $30 Everyday Rewards voucher will be added to your Everyday Rewards account within the next 3 days and will be ready for you to redeem in store or online.”

Woolworths New Zealand said all of the customers who incorrectly received the offer have since been contacted and “ given them 500 Everyday Rewards points by way of apology”.

We will be undertaking a full review of this incident to understand what we can do to prevent this happening in future,” the spokesperson said.

Woolworths Australia confirmed no shoppers across the pond had been affected by the error.
